US Allows Anthropic to Redeploy Mythos 5 to 100 Cybersecurity Firms — Fable 5 Still Blocked

Source: Deutsche Welle — The US government has authorised Anthropic to redeploy its Claude Mythos 5 model to more than 100 trusted American cybersecurity firms and critical infrastructure organisations, the company announced on June 27. The move partially reverses the June 12 export control order that forced Anthropic to withdraw both Mythos 5 and Fable 5 from all users.

"Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organisations that operate and defend critical infrastructure," Anthropic said in a statement. The company added it is "continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again."

The original ban was triggered by concerns that powerful AI systems could be misused by military intelligence in China, Russia, and other adversarial nations. Fable 5 — Anthropic's frontier image generation model — remains blocked under the same order.

Analysis

This carve-out is the shape of things to come. The government isn't just blocking models — it's becoming the gatekeeper that decides *which* organisations get access to *which* capabilities. A hundred cybersecurity firms get Mythos 5 because the administration can frame it as defensive infrastructure. Fable 5 stays locked because generative imagery doesn't have a neat national security justification for selective release. The distinction is arbitrary but politically sustainable, and it creates a tiered AI access regime where "trusted partner" status becomes a competitive moat. The firms that get early Mythos 5 access will build expertise and integrations that latecomers can't replicate. This isn't export control — it's industrial policy by access list.
