THE HOOK

Qualcomm just handed Amazon a $4 billion stock warrant and a shopping list that could run to $60 billion of AI data-center silicon — which is how you know the smartphone chip company is done pretending Nvidia's aisle is closed.

THE GIST

On 8 September Qualcomm said Amazon can buy up to $60 billion of its AI data-center chips and related kit under a multi-generation partnership. Amazon gets warrants covering about $4 billion of Qualcomm stock at $161.26 a share, vesting as it buys product. The work covers custom inference chips plus optical links up to 1.6 terabits per second.

THE TAKE

This is not a press-release friendship. It is vendor finance with a cloud logo. Qualcomm needs a post-Apple modem story; Amazon needs more inference silicon that is not a single GPU vendor's price list. The catch is execution: custom chips slip, optics is a new muscle for Qualcomm after AlphaWave, and $60 billion is a ceiling, not a purchase order. Shares popped. The wafers still have to exist.

OPINION

Reuters reports Amazon joining Microsoft and Meta as Qualcomm cloud customers, with a $15 billion data-center chip revenue target by 2029. Analyst Bob O'Donnell called it the reassurance the market wanted. Fine. Reassurance is cheap; shipping 1.6 Tbps optics into AWS halls is not.

The warrant structure copies the Marvell–Google playbook: give the hyperscaler equity optionality so the chipmaker can print a gigantic TAM number. Treat $60 billion as marketing until purchase volumes show up in filings. Qualcomm will also run more chip-design workloads on AWS, which is a neat circularity: the customer hosts the tools that design the chips it might buy.

If you are Nvidia, this is another customer trying to grow a second source. If you are Qualcomm, it is the only way off the handset treadmill. If you are Amazon, it is leverage dressed as partnership. The interesting test is whether inference custom silicon actually displaces enough GPU spend to matter, or whether this becomes another strategic line item that never leaves the slide deck.
