GPT-6.1 Terra Wants Your Boring Desk Jobs, Cheaply

OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra halves API prices versus GPT-5.6 Terra and aims squarely at computer-use grunt work.

THE HOOK

OpenAI has built a model whose dream job is your invoice inbox.

THE GIST

OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast computer-use model at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output. API prices are 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra, and OpenAI says it finishes tasks over three times faster than GPT-6 Astra.

THE TAKE

This is the model that actually matters, not the flagship. Agents die on cost and latency long before they die on intelligence, and Terra attacks both. The catch is that cheap agents get let loose on real forms, real accounts and real money. Mistakes scale too.

OPINION

OpenAI claims its error rate on tricky prompts fell from 53.6% to 16.7% at low effort, which is a huge drop but still one bad answer in six. The model is already listed on OpenRouter, so developers will find out within days whether the benchmark claims survive contact with messy spreadsheets.
