Mistral's Chonk is Europe's biggest open-weight bet on keeping data at home

Mistral's largest open-weight model was trained on 4,000 Nvidia chips in Europe and can run under EU jurisdiction.

THE HOOK

Mistral's answer to America's closed models is a big open-weight unit called Chonk, and yes, that's the real name.

THE GIST

French startup Mistral announced Chonk, its largest open-weight model, on 6 October, per AFP via France 24. It was trained on 4,000 Nvidia chips over two months in Mistral's own European data centres, and customers can self-host it or run it in an EU-jurisdiction region.

THE TAKE

Sovereignty is Mistral's whole sales pitch, and Chonk is the right product for it. Governments don't need the smartest model on earth, they need one they can lock in their own basement. The catch is that Mistral says it's still being refined, and 4,000 chips is modest next to American training runs. Big name, smaller cluster.

OPINION

It's Mistral's first major launch since raising three billion euros at a valuation above 21 billion, France 24 reports, and it lands a day after Reflection's Beam made the same cheaper-to-run pitch from the US. Open weights are now the battleground where everyone who isn't OpenAI or Anthropic fights for the enterprise wallet.
