Daily Brief: Anthropic puts 5% of its shares into a public benefit fund

Anthropic puts 5% of its shares into a public benefit fund

Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares, subject to stockholder approval, to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. The board can add another 2% for every 50% rise in the company's value above a set baseline, so the fund's slice grows as Anthropic does. It is a wholly owned LLC rather than a charity, which lets it make large donations or pay money directly to groups such as workers hit by AI. Anthropic says none of the equity will fund lobbying or political giving. With founder and employee pledges, it puts about 20% of the company towards public good. The catch: governance and the valuation milestones are not published yet, and the move lands as Anthropic heads towards a huge IPO. Read Anthropic's announcement

Microsoft pulls out of Nscale's Essex AI data centre

Microsoft has ended its deal to anchor Nscale's planned £2bn site in Loughton, Essex, after grid officials said power would not arrive until the 2030s. The site was meant to run 23,040 Nvidia GB300 GPUs from early next year. Nscale says it is still committed and is looking at other power sources. BBC News

Tenstorrent raises $1.5B at a $6.2B valuation

Jim Keller's RISC-V chip company closed a $1.5B Series E led by Trace Capital and Innovation X, with Fidelity, ARK and Morgan Stanley joining. The money goes on shipping its Galaxy servers at scale for open-weight models and on the AI and CPU designs it licenses to chipmakers such as Samsung and LG. Tenstorrent newsroom
