THE HOOK
Anthropic has made its smartest general model cheaper to run, while locking the genuinely spicy version behind a velvet rope.
THE GIST
Claude Fable 5.1 is generally available for coding, knowledge work and long-running tasks, with cache-read pricing cut from $1 to $0.25 per million tokens. Anthropic says typical workloads should cost about 25% less, and highly agentic work up to 45% less; Claude Mythos 5.1 is the same model with more permissive safeguards for vetted cyber and life-science users.
THE TAKE
This is a much smarter commercial move than shouting another benchmark score into the void. Cheap cache reads matter when agents repeatedly chew through the same codebase, documents or lab notes, and Anthropic is clearly targeting the expensive, persistent workloads where token bills become architecture decisions.
The catch is that the headline saving depends on workloads actually reusing context; one-shot prompts get no magical discount. Mythos is the more interesting release because Anthropic is admitting, in plain product form, that frontier capability and unrestricted access don't belong in the same box. That box will still leak eventually.
Anthropic’s announcement reports a 52.6% result for Fable 5.1 on Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1, while also noting a 3.5–4.5 point standard error. The useful signal is not that one score wins a leaderboard; it is that Anthropic is tuning the model for unattended work and pricing it accordingly.
For enterprise buyers, the decision is becoming less about whether a model can perform a clever demo and more about whether it can stay useful for 38 hours without setting the finance department on fire. Fable 5.1 looks built for that reality. That is a far more durable advantage than another trophy benchmark, provided the invoices agree. In production, boring savings beat spectacular demos every time, especially when an agent is left running overnight.
