Google lets rival AI agents into Android Studio

Android Studio's Bring Your Own Agent mode runs 40+ outside coding agents, OpenAI and Anthropic included.

THE HOOK

Google just opened Android Studio's front door to rival coding agents, including ones from OpenAI and Anthropic.

THE GIST

Android Studio's new Bring Your Own Agent mode uses the Agent Client Protocol to run more than 40 outside coding agents inside the IDE, per The Morning Build. Google also shipped an alpha Agentic API on Gemini Nano 4 in ML Kit, plus MCP support for calling app functions.

THE TAKE

Smart move, and a slightly humbling one. Developers were already pasting code between Studio and whatever agent they liked, so Google is choosing to own the IDE rather than force Gemini on everyone. The headache is quality control: forty agents means forty ways to wreck a Gradle build. Choice is great until it breaks.

OPINION

The same Morning Build digest notes the XREAL AURA glasses on Android XR ship in mid-November for $1,099, which is where on-device Gemini Nano agents get their first real test. If those local agents feel snappy, the plug-in agents become a sideshow; if not, Google just handed its best developers to the competition.
